Welcome to Oh My Blog! A brand new monthly interview series featuring a whole host of fellow bloggers.
Each month, there will be different themed posts, showcasing the very best bloggers out there. This month, the questions are based on the fitting February topic of love!
This month, we’re meeting Lauren from Mummy Is A Gadget Geek, who blogs about gadgets and family life…
Tell us about yourself and Mummy is a Gadget Geek:
I’m Lauren, and I blog at Mummy is a Gadget Geek. I’ve had an online diary since 2001, but in 2011 while I was pregnant with my second child D, I decided to start up this blog and write there instead, including overviews of parenting gadgets and tech that we had come across – this was following feedback from friends that I always had an answer for a parenting problem!
As someone with a disability, tech and gadgets that make parenting less physically difficult and help encourage my children to be independent have been important to me, and I enjoy sharing our experiences of this with others who may also benefit from them.
I’m also a little bit obsessed with zombies. And I like tents.
What is your current relationship status?
I’m in one. Actually we have been together 10 years this year which has really gone by very quickly!
Do you ever celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Not really. Often the kids and I will do some themed crafting and sometimes OH and I might sit together and watch a movie after the kids have gone to bed, but we don’t go out and we don’t buy each other gifts usually. Well not now anyway, maybe we did in the first year or two!
I guess I kind of feel like any day can be a day to celebrate a relationship, it doesn’t have to be a specific commercialised one. Chocolate is always welcome though, if you’re reading this OH…
It’s your first date! Where do you go?
Hmm… from memory, we went to Carluccios, and a duck race (that’s where loads of plastic ducks get dumped in a river and you sponsor one of them, then hope it wins!). If it were to be a first date now, then I’d quite like to go to the games pub that has opened near me. Or some live music somewhere. Or somewhere with nice food.
What’s the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for you?
My ex bought me a little giraffe, and wrapped its leg in masking tape and wrote a really lovely note with it, when I had a knee operation many years ago. It sounds a bit random but we had only been together a couple of weeks and he was so kind and caring – it meant a lot to me that he’d gone to that effort (I’m almost as keen on giraffes as I am on the topic of zombies).
What is your favourite romantic film? Cheesier the better.
Er… I don’t really do those kinds of films. Does Trolls count? I really like the bit where Branch sings ‘True Colours’ to Poppy.
Oh, and Beauty and the Beast of course!
Spill the beans! Who’s your celebrity crush?
(He’s from Flight of the Conchords, which is an awesome tv series and if you’ve never watched it then you should)
Flowers are pretty popular at this time of year. Do you like receiving them or do they really not float your boat?
I do like them, but only certain types – gladioli and tulips are my favourites. And you can’t beat some cheery daffodils! I do prefer them living rather than cut, although saying that I am rubbish with plants and plants would probably prefer to be cut that endure the slow death I inflict on them. Definitely don’t have green fingers.
I’d be quite pleased with a cactus actually, if I’m honest.
Do you have children? Do you want any (or any more)?
Yes I do, three of them. We are definitely done – my body couldn’t take growing any more, and my mind / wallet couldn’t deal with any more either.
I am an antenatal teacher though, so I get to enjoy newborns vicariously pretty often (and remind myself – on the odd occasion that I do get broody – whilst teaching other people what to expect in the early days exactly why I don’t want another one myself!).
What would be (or was) your choice of song for your first dance at your wedding?
We haven’t done the wedding thing yet so I don’t know. I joke to OH that it will be the salmon dance, who knows, maybe if we ever get round to it it will be.
Do you have any plans yet for Valentine’s Day 2017?
See above, hehe.
Raw oysters are pretty famous for being an aphrodisiac. Have you ever tried them?
Yes, I first had oysters in South Africa, and more recently in New Zealand (OH is a Kiwi). The south of the South Island is famous for bluff oysters, they are delicious 🙂
Imagining money’s no object, where would you go for a romantic getaway?
One of those places with beds on the beach and white sands and warm water, and a butler that brings cocktails. I don’t know where that is but I know such things do exist. Actually Magnetic Island in Australia would be pretty cool, not sure if they have cocktail butlers there though. Last time I was there, there was a crocodile that kept sneaking up on the beaches which is not quite so romantic – unless someone is heroically rescuing you from a crocodile whilst wearing no top and singing something appropriate maybe.
What’s the best Valentine’s gift you’ve ever received?
I got sent flowers to my work office unexpectedly once. They got sent to the wrong Lauren and went all over the place before they finally made it to me, just before I went home. The most famous bunch of work flowers ever!
Finally, what is the number one most important thing you value in a relationship.
Mutual appreciation of zombie movies?
And being able to talk to each other about anything (including zombies), I guess that’s important too 🙂
