I love cake. Who doesn’t? So when I was offered the chance to review the letterbox cake from, UK based, Baker Days I was thrilled. So was Bob L, who is equally keen on cake…
I did have an added complication though. I am currently not based in the UK so had wondered if that would count me out of this wonderful opportunity. I was thrilled to find out that not only do Baker Days offer an international service, they also offer delivery to BFPO (British Forces Post Office) addresses. Delivery to BFPO can sometimes cause problems so I was thrilled to see this on their website:
We have been approved to send our Letterbox Fruit cakes to BFPO addresses. Orders under 2kg don’t incur extra delivery fees!”
Woo hoo! So I emailed the lovely lady at Baker Days back and we were good to go.
The Baker Days website is really easy to use. You go in and select your design, choose your size, choose your sponge, then quantity. Easy peasy! Once done you then get the option to personalise your cake, which I think is a great added touch!
When you visit the website, they have a huge selection of designs to choose from. You can personalise each one and can even have one with your own photo, or design the cake from scratch. It really offers an option for every eventuality.
I was really impressed to find that they also offer gluten free and dairy free options.
So I ordered my cake and waited with anticipation to its arrival.
I ordered on the Sunday, on Monday I was told my cake had been dispatched and I had received it by Thursday. I was incredibly impressed with the speed of delivery.
The cake arrived and the presentation was impressive. It arrived in a tin, with a card and a small packet of love hearts.
When I opened the tin, the first thing that struck me was the amazing smell. At this stage, I was incredibly sad that I had to wait to try it out. I had promised the boys I wouldn’t touch it until they finished Kindergarten at lunchtime.
That was a LONG three hours, as the cake tempted me from across the table. Very difficult when I was trying to concentrate on writing.
When the monkeys arrived home, the only thing that was on their mind was the giraffe cake. We quickly and easily removed it from the packaging and tucked in. The boys loved it, even Bob D expressed his delight and he doesn’t normally like cake.
Bob D: “mmm, that is great and nice. It tastes like strawberries and banana. It is yummy.”
Bob L: “Yummy, I like it. It’s tasty. It tastes like cake. I like cake.”
As we had a playdate that afternoon, we decided to take the remaining cake with us and share the love. My friend also liked it, She said: “I like the fact it is personailised and you can have photos on it. The cake was moist but I would have liked a little more fruit it in.”
So what did I think of it?
- Easy to use website
- Lots of great options
- Speedy delivery
- Great presentation, design and smell upon opening
- The icing on the cake was delicious. Tasty, with just the right sweetness. The icing was a good thickness too.
- The cake base was soft and fresh, tasted delicious
Would I recommend? Definitely.
Would I use the service again? Definitely. Although I would like to try out the chocolate chip sponge.
